Talking about temperature and degree in Spanish
Temperature and degree in Spanish
- The most common way to indicate temperature in Spanish is to use estar which means "to be" in English, followed by a, the number of degrees, and grados (degrees).
form of estar + a + number of degrees + grados
Note:
While estamos a (literally translated as "We are") is often used to talk about the temperature being experienced by the speaker and people around him or her, está a is used to discuss the temperature of other places.
For example:
Estamos a treinta y dos grados - It is 32 degrees (When you and people around you are experiencing)
Está a treinta y dos grados = It is 32 degrees (When you are talking about it and not experiencing it directly)
Hace una semana estaban a 30 grados, pero ahora estamos a 10 - A week ago it was 30 degrees, but now it's 10
Estamos a 10 bajo cero - It's 10 below zero
- The temperature cna also be preceded by a preposition.
For example:
Tenía una temperatura de 36.8 grados - She had a temperature of 36.8 degrees
Colocar en horno a 200 grados durante 15 minutos - Set in a 200-degree oven for 15 minutes
- Most of Spanish-speaking countries use temperatures in Celsius rather than Fahrenheit. So make sure that you are using the right scale. To convert temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius, you just need to subtract 32 then multiply the result by five-ninths (0.555). To convert the temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply it by 1.8 then add 32. So 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is the same as 37 degrees Celsius.
